First International Interns Arrive From Jamaica For Year at WHC

They’re finally here! Six J-1 Work Visa Program Interns from Jamaica arrived in Cedar Falls July 28. A seventh flew in early July 29 and another is scheduled to be here August 1.

The interns have been pre-assigned to one of three categories for their year-long training program: culinary (meal planning and preparation in the kitchens), food & beverage (wait staff, dishwashing, plating and more) or front desk (customer service)

The program at Western Home Communities is under the state department’s Hospitality & Tourism umbrella, since there is no senior living category. Click here to read more about the J-1 Visa program requirements.

Interns reacted positively to their accommodations at Stanard Family Center near downtown Cedar Falls. The location will allow them to walk to concerts, retail shops, restaurants and other events throughout the coming year, giving them a feel for community life in the Midwest.

Interns must be enrolled in a formal educational program or have recently completed one; many already have experience and wanted training in the United States to help further their knowledge and careers. Roger, at right, is a chef who’s already worked for many high-end resorts in his home country. He’ll learn even more while he’s here and we hope to learn how to create some Jamaican meals to enjoy!
